The Dragon of Lonely Island Wonderful Read – J. Mireles – Taylor, TX USA
This is such an imaginative book. My 9yr old girl and 10yr old boy and I just LOVE this book. You find yourself going into the book yourself. It’s a great book for children, without anything inappropriate, not too scary at all, great lessons.
My husband found this book at our local library and we started reading it to our 5yr old and boy were we all pleasantly surprised. This book is fantastic, sweet and intriguing, once you start reading you can’t stop. My daughter even goes back and rereads the book all by herself now. : “Rebecca Rupp’s magical tale . . . radiates a glow as golden as the dragon’s scales.” — BOSTON SUNDAY GLOBE
Hannah, Zachary, and Sarah Emily are spending the summer at their great-aunt Mehitabel’s house on faraway Lonely Island. There, in a cave hidden high above the ocean, they discover a fabulous creature: a glittering three-headed golden dragon with a kind heart, an unpredictable temper, and a memory that spans 20,000 years. Transported by the magic of the dragon’s stories, the children meet Mei-lan, a young girl in ancient China; nineteenth-century cabin boy Jamie Pritchett; and, in more recent times, Hitty and her brother, Will, who survive a frightening plane crash on a desert island. In this fluidly written novel, Rebecca Rupp exploreswhat three children from the present learn from the past – and from anunlikely but wise and generous friend.

Unforgettable (Zebra romantic suspense) Naja….
Forgettable … – kashew – Zurich Switzerland
A harmless piece of fluff ….okay for reading while waiting for a bus, train or plane.
This is the first Meryl Sawyer book I’ve read, but after this one I read all 10 out of 11 of her books in two weeks. She’s excellent! Unforgettable is a fantastic love story with creepy suspense thrown in. The parts in the book that deal with what the villian is thinking gave me chills. Lucky is a character that you can really sympathize with. Watching her grow throughout the story in her relationship with Greg and with the animals is wonderful. I almost didn’t read this book because a few of the reviews said that loose ends were not tied up – but they were. The book explained what Lucky was mumbling when Greg first found her and the reasons she looked the way she did. All in all this is a very entertaining book which I highly recommend. : Meryl Sawyer writes great romantic suspense–and this is her finest novel to date. Set in Hawaii, Unforgettable is just that. Search and rescue hero Greg Braxton has been unlucky in love until he finds “Lucky,” an almost-dead peroxide blonde, at the bottom of a ravine. Too bad she has a rare and debilitating form of amnesia, which prevents her from ever remembering anything about her past–let alone why she’s wearing a dead woman’s shoe, is dressed as a prostitute, and is found in a stolen car. Quilling acquired its name due to the tool first used, a quill. Using simple tools, long strips of paper are tightly wound and released to form complicated and complex shapes.
Quilling was considered a worthy pastime for women of good breeding in the 1700-1800’s. The patterns often imitated the original ironwork of the day. Quilling, or the art of paper sculpture, is a great way to make some gifts that will be remembered for a lifetime, and there is no limit to the creative ideas you can have for patterns. Ideas can be geared for any theme; weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and can be used to adorn many different things like envelopes or boxes, scrapbooks, you name it. Quilling can also be used to decorate boxes, cards, frames, mirrors, scrapbook pages, etc. Quilling papers come in many colors and styles in addition to widths.Quilling is often done on cards but also on boxes, hats, as stand alone items and many more varieties. The creative quilling designs are perfect for rubber stamping, picture framing and scrapbooking. A few items that you will need (really pretty much ALL you need) follows:
First, you need a quilling tool of some kind to roll the paper strips on. A paper quilling tool is a metal tool with a tiny slot in one end. Second. a pack of quilling paper, which you can buy in multi color packs and sizes. Also, some white glue and hatpins or “T” pins (office supply products) or toothpicks to apply the glue. A sheet of Con-tact-brand clear adhesive-backed paper is handy and a clipboard or a 9″ X 12″ piece of heavy cardboard can serve as a flat work surface With just these few items, you can be on your way to quilling an idea you can find online, in books or one you have designed yourself. You can always use your hands for a technique called finger rolling. Some other tools that you will find helpful (but not required) and are probably around your house are: wax paper clear sheet protectors, to protect your work surface when gluing pieces together, cardboard, a book, styrofoam, or corkboard for a firm portable work surface scissors for cutting shapes or paper strips a small plate, bottle cap, or something that you can use to put a little bit of glue on so that your glue bottle does not dry out. A ruler will help you with keeping your lines straight or measuring your shapes to ensure they are the same size.
A damp cloth or sponge (even baby wipes) help you keep your fingers from getting glued together Tweezers are helpful to help you pick up your pieces and place them in a specific location.
A fringer tool lets you create fringed paper strips with a single touch and then turn them into fringed flowers. Tip: Glue that is not too runny and dries quickly is a bonus.
I put my good old Elmer’s glue in a contact lens case. I also add a few drops of water to the glue if it becomes thick. Then you can just use the toothpick or pin to spread the glue where you need it. Question: What other things can I embellish with quilling besides scrapbooks and cards. Answer: You can do tons of stuff with your quilling… For example: you can put quilling on mats for pictures; make three dimensional free standing projects like dolls and plants (which can be kept in mini display cases similar to those used for model cars). You can embellish cakes with quilled flowers; create centerpieces for your dining room table or mantle; make special gift tags for Christmas; create placeholders for weddings or dinner parties; personalize the cover of a blank journal book; or you can even use quilling to accent different aspects of a favorite scenic picture, such as the roofs or windows of homes in a cityscape. With just few items, you can be on your way to quilling an idea you can find online, in books or one you have designed yourself. You can always use your hands for a technique called finger rolling…. This is a very
relaxing and enjoyable craft. The results can be spectacular. The cost is practically zero.

Laughter is a birthright, a natural part of life. Infants begin smiling during the first weeks of life and laugh out loud within months of being born.
Humor helps us stay emotionally healthy as long as it is not as someone else’s expense. (laughing at someone)
A healthy sense of humor is related to being able to laugh at oneself and one’s life. Laughing at oneself can be a way of accepting and respecting oneself. Lack of a sense of humor is directly related to lower self esteem. (Note that laughing at oneself can also be unhealthy if one laughs as a way of self degradation.)
o Mental Health Benefits of Laughter
o Humor enhances our ability to connect with others.
o Humor helps us replace distressing emotions with pleasurable feelings. You cannot feel angry, depressed, anxious, guilty, or resentful and experience humor at the same time.
o Humor changes behavior – when we experience humor we talk more, make more eye contact with others, touch others
o Humor increases energy, and with increased energy we may perform activities that we might otherwise avoid.
o Finally, humor is good for mental health because it makes us feel good!
Social benefits of humor and laughter
Can we get through this hardship together. Humor binds us together, lightens our burdens and helps us keep things in perspective. One of the things that saps our energy is the time, focus and effort we put into coping with life’s problems including each other’s limitations. Our families, our friends and our neighbors are not perfect and neither are our marriages, our kids or our in-laws. When we laugh together, it brings us closer together instead of pulling us apart.
Remember that even in the most difficult of times, a laugh, or even simply a smile, can go a long way in helping us feel better
o Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.
o Humor unites us, especially when we laugh together.
o Laughter heals.
o Laughs and smiles are enjoyed best when shared with others.
o To laugh or not to laugh is your choice.
If laughter is the best medicine, where is the pharmacy where we can fill our prescriptions?
Eventually, we want to incorporate humor and laughter into the fabric of our lives, finding it naturally in everything we do.
Here are ways to start.
o Smiling is the beginning of laughter. Like laughter, it’s contagious.
o Count your blessings. Literally make a list. The simple act of considering the good things in your life will distance you from negative thoughts.
o Spend time with people who have successfully incorporated humor into their lives.
Incorporating humor into everyday life
I work at home and in my apartment complex there are two small children who live upstairs. When I need a boost, Grace and Joe will come down and we either color, take the dogs for a walk, go for ice cream…I always end up laughing and it always helps me.
Making paper dolls and doll clothes, laughing and playing pretend with the little children transformed my life. It sparks my imagination, helps my creativity flourish, brightens my outlook, and best of all rekindles my playful side.
Some events are clearly sad and not occasions for laughter. But most don’t carry an overwhelming sense of sadness or delight. Most fall into the gray zone of ordinary life, and they give us the choice to laugh or not.
One characteristic that helps us laugh is not taking ourselves too seriously. We’ve all known the classic tight-jawed sourpuss who takes everything with deathly seriousness and never laughs at anything. No fun there.
Here are some ways we can lighten up..
o Dress less seriously.
o Keep a toy on your desk or in your car.
o Laugh at yourself. Share your embarrassing moments. The best way to take ourselves less seriously is talk about times when we took ourselves too seriously.
o Pay attention to children and emulate them. They are the experts on playing, taking life lightly, and laughing.
Checklist for lightening up
When you find yourself taken over by what seems to be a horrible problem, ask these questions:
* Is it really worth getting upset over?
* Is it worth upsetting others?
* Is it that important?
* Is the situation irreparable?
Is it really my problem?
Humor can be used as a weapon to belittle others or “score points” in some fashion. Use humor with care by being mindful of the following.
* Use humor at the expense of yourself or a group you are part of, rather than at someone’s else’s expense.
* Don’t use humor when someone else is in so much pain that humor will not make them feel better. When someone is physically injured, suffering a serious crisis, or when you are attending a somber event, such as a funeral, humor, no matter how clever or well-intended, will not make people feel better.
* Use humor that everyone present can enjoy. Inside jokes can make people feel excluded. Adult humor in the presence of children is unhealthy for the children, troublesome for their parents or guardians and thoughtless on the part of the would-be comedian.
